Is the Brother 1034D a good serger? For a home sewist, yes. It is a friendly first serger with color-coded threading and a huge community. It is the wrong pick if you need a coverstitch hem or a machine for daily business sewing. If you buy it, test it inside the return window.
Amazon shows the Brother 1034D at 4.6 out of 5 across 12,183 reviews (checked October 27, 2026). We did not read all 12,183. We read 19 five-star reviews and 100 reviews of one to three stars, then 74 posts and 145 comments on r/sewing. This Brother 1034D review is what those say. The short version is on our Brother 1034D serger page. This is the long one.
One warning about the sample. The 1034D has been on sale since about 2010, and the “helpful” sort on Amazon surfaces a lot of old reviews. Only 27 of the 100 critical reviews we read are from 2024 to 2026, and 17 are from 2026. We use the whole batch for the counts below and mark the recent slice where it matters.
Key takeaways
- Owners who sew lightly tend to love it, some for ten years or more.
- Color-coded lay-in threading is the feature reviewers praise most.
- The big critical themes are a looper timing defect and wear from heavy daily use.
- It does not make a coverstitch hem, the double-row hem on a store-bought T-shirt.
- Oil it, thread it and test it the day it arrives.

What do owners love about the Brother 1034D?
The threading guides. The 1034D uses lay-in threading with color-coded guides and a threader for the lower looper. Reviewers who like the machine come back to this again and again. One 5-star reviewer wrote: “The colour-coded threads were amazing to show how they actually interlock.” Another said, “I can’t believe how simple this machine is to work with - everyone seems to think a serger is a mysterious machine - nope.”
There is also a practical trick in the reviews. One owner says the machine arrives pre-threaded, “so you can tie new thread right on the old one and thread easily!” We have not tested that ourselves, but it is worth knowing when you open the box.
It does not feel like a purchase you regret. A 2015 reviewer opened with “SORRY I WAITED SO LONG TO BUY A SERGER” and said they had been intimidated for years. A 2026 reviewer wrote that they had always wanted a serger but thought it too extravagant “since I don’t sew a lot,” and added, “I do think I will sew many more things now.” These are the buyers we write for: people who use a machine now and then and are scared of it.
It lasts for light users. On Reddit, one owner wrote: “I have had a Brother 1034D since 2009 and it’s still kicking.” A 2026 Amazon reviewer said they bought theirs “over 10 years ago (even had to ship it once)” and that it was still working. Note the honest detail in that second review: it needed shipping once.
The community. One sewist wrote that they chose “the brother one that everyone has (1034d)” because they figured the troubleshooting would have more YouTube options if they needed them. That is a real advantage for a nervous first-timer. Most of what goes wrong with a serger has been asked about before.
The stitches. According to Brother, the machine makes four-thread overlock, three-thread overlock, narrow hem, rolled hem and ribbon lock. It has a differential feed from 0.7 to 2.0 and runs up to 1,300 stitches per minute. A reviewer who owns Babylock and Juki sergers wrote that they “find myself using this one more often.”
What do owners complain about?
Here is what we found in the 100 critical reviews. A review can mention more than one problem, so the numbers overlap.
| Complaint | Reviews (of 100) |
|---|---|
| Thread, tension or looper trouble | 44 |
| Stopped, jammed, defective or returned | 43 |
| Threading is hard or re-threading is a chore | 36 |
| Manual or instructions, including a dated DVD | 34 |
| Plastic parts feel flimsy, loose needle plate | 31 |
| Needles break | 30 |
| Support or warranty | 25 |
| Worth saving for a better machine | 23 |
Timing is the model-specific problem. Within the 43 “stopped or defective” reviews, 19 of the 100 mention looper timing, where the upper and lower loopers hit each other and the stitch skips. Four of those are from 2024 to 2026, so it is not only an old problem. A May 2026 reviewer wrote: “The wheel would not turn because the upper and lower looper would hit each other, known as a timing problem.” A September 2026 reviewer wrote: “Needed to be serviced straight out of the box to get it running correctly. Issue with timing.” Seven of the 43 reviews say the machine arrived broken or used. Another 2026 reviewer wrote only: “Seized up after an hour of use.”
Threading is the fear and also the complaint. 36 of the 100 mention it. A March 2026 reviewer said that putting the thread back through and making it work again “is a time consuming mess.” Against that, a Reddit commenter wrote, “There’s no need to be intimidated by threading a serger. It’s really not that difficult.” Both are true. The diagram makes it take minutes. The first time is still intimidating, and re-threading after a break is a chore.

The manual. 34 of the 100 complain about the manual or the instructions. One 3-star reviewer also said the rolled hem settings suggested in the manual “do not work well.” Test your tension on scrap before a rolled hem.
Plastic and the needle plate. 31 mention flimsy plastic or a loose needle plate, but most of those reviews are old. One from 2017 said the needle plate started falling apart one month after the warranty expired.
Support. 25 of the 100 mention support or warranty, including a 2012 reviewer who said that Brother “does NOT stand behind their machine.” Brother’s spec sheet lists a 1, 5 and 25 year warranty structure. We did not confirm what each tier covers, so check Brother’s page.
Is the 1034D better for light use or heavy use?
This is the divider in the reviews. A 3-star reviewer from November 2025 wrote: “Keep in mind that I use my serger every single day. I own my own small business.” Another 3-star reviewer from 2026 wrote, “I have had 3 in the last 4 years.” Compare that with owners who sew now and then and report a decade or more. The pattern in the recent critical reviews is heavy use or a factory defect. If you will run a machine daily for work, the community points to Juki or Baby Lock instead.

Who is the Brother 1034D for?
- You sew at home, lightly to moderately, and want finished edges and cleaner seams on stretch fabric.
- You are nervous about sergers and want a model with a large community and color-coded guides.
- You are willing to oil it, use serger cones and test it the day it arrives.
Who should look at another serger?
- You want a store-style T-shirt hem. That is a coverstitch, and the 1034D does not make one. One 5-star reviewer sent theirs back for exactly this reason. Read Serger vs coverstitch: which one you need before you decide. The Singer 14T968DC is a serger with coverstitch, and it was rated 4.2 of 5 from 1,503 Amazon reviews on October 27, 2026.
- You will sew every day for a business. The Juki MO-80CB (4.8 of 5 on Amazon) is the model people point to for studio sewing.
- You want a metal body and more speed. Look at the Brother ST4031HD, though our latest search did not return it.
What should you do the day it arrives?
Oil it, thread it, test it. We wrote a step-by-step in serger for beginners: your first day. The most important part is the last step: sew scrap fabric while you are still inside the return window.
Bottom line: is the Brother 1034D worth buying?
For a home sewist who wants to try a serger without a studio-sized budget, the 1034D has a lot going for it. It has guided threading, a full list of finishing stitches and a community that has answered most questions. The reviews also show real risk: a timing defect that appears in about one in five of the critical reviews, and a weaker record under daily use. We think it is a fair choice if you treat the first week as a test. It is the wrong one if you need a coverstitch or a daily workhorse.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Brother 1034D good for beginners?
Yes, for most home sewists. It has lay-in threading with color-coded guides and a lower looper threader, and a large community with many tutorials. Plan to test it right away, because a looper timing defect shows up in about one in five of the critical reviews.
Can the Brother 1034D sew knits?
Yes. The differential feed adjusts from 0.7 to 2.0, which helps stretch fabric feed evenly and lie flat.
Does the Brother 1034D make a coverstitch?
No. It makes overlock, narrow hem, rolled hem and ribbon lock. For the double-row T-shirt hem, you need a coverstitch machine or a serger with a coverstitch, like the Singer 14T968DC.
How long does a Brother 1034D last?
Light users report a long life. One Reddit owner wrote theirs is still going since 2009. Heavy daily use is where the recent critical reviews cluster.
