Brother 1034D serger

Professional finished edges at home, with threading guides that show the way

Threading a serger is a skill, not a mystery. The 1034D comes pre-threaded and color-codes every thread path, so your first project starts with a map instead of a guess.

  • Color-coded lay-in threading: tie the new thread onto the old and follow the colors
  • Clean, store-quality edges on knits and wovens, with a differential feed that keeps stretch fabric flat
  • Overlock, rolled hem and narrow hem from one machine, at up to 1,300 stitches per minute

A serger can feel like a machine you are not allowed to touch

Everyone says sergers are mysterious, pricey and impossible to thread. Maybe one just landed in your sewing room as a gift, and the box is still sealed because you do not know where to start. That feeling is common, and it is exactly what a clear threading path and a big community of tutorials are for.

“my amazingly thoughtful husband got me this serger. I was so excited I cried. I can't wait to learn how to use it. But I'm feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start.”

How the 1034D takes the mystery out

  1. Close-up of the four color-coded tension dials and thread guides on the Brother 1034D

Follow the colors, not the manual

The lay-in threading path is marked with color-coded guides, and the lower looper has its own threader. The machine comes pre-threaded, so changing a color can be as simple as tying the new thread onto the old one and pulling it through.

  2. Dial in the differential for knits

The differential feed ranges from 0.7 to 2.0, which is what keeps jersey and other stretch fabric from rippling or stretching out as it feeds. Set it once for your fabric and sew.

  3. Presser foot and cutting knife of the Brother 1034D

Trim and finish in a single pass

The lower knife trims the raw edge while the stitches wrap it, so the seam and the finished edge happen together, the way you see them inside store-bought clothes.

What you get with it

Store-quality edges at home

Overlock seams and finished edges that stop fraying and look clean on the inside of your projects.

Knits that lie flat

A 0.7 to 2.0 differential feed helps stretch fabric feed evenly instead of waving.

Quick work

Up to 1,300 stitches per minute, so long seams and hems go fast.

3 or 4 thread stitches, plus rolled hem

Choose 4-thread or 3-thread overlock, narrow hem, rolled hem or ribbon lock, depending on the fabric and the look.

A removable free arm

Open it up for cuffs, sleeves and other small tubular pieces.

Help is easy to find

It is a model many sewists own, so there are plenty of YouTube walkthroughs and Reddit threads when you want a second pair of eyes.

Ready to sew from the box

It includes 4 thread cones and 3 presser feet (standard, blind stitch and gathering), plus a foot pedal, tweezers, a brush and a trim catcher.

Questions people ask before buying

Serger or coverstitch machine?

They do different jobs. The 1034D is a serger: it makes overlock seams, narrow hems, rolled hems and ribbon lock. The double-row hem you see on t-shirts is a coverstitch. If you want both in one machine, the Singer 14T968DC is a serger with a coverstitch. See it on Amazon

Is threading hard?

It is a skill you pick up fast. The lay-in path has color-coded guides, the lower looper has its own threader, and the machine comes pre-threaded, so you can tie new thread onto the old. Plenty of video tutorials show every step.

What comes in the box?

Four thread cones, a soft cover, a needle pouch, four thread nets and four cone caps, tweezers, a brush, a hex wrench, a trim catcher, a foot pedal and an English and Spanish manual. Three presser feet are included: standard, blind stitch and gathering.

Does it work on knits?

Yes. The differential feed adjusts from 0.7 to 2.0, which is what helps stretch fabric feed evenly and lie flat.

Do I still need my regular sewing machine?

Yes, and they work well as a pair. Your sewing machine does the topstitching, buttonholes and zippers. The serger finishes the edges and sews seams on stretch fabric.

Can I use it for rolled hems?

Yes. Rolled hem is one of the stitches on the machine, along with narrow hem, 3-thread and 4-thread overlock and ribbon lock.
